I was told there's no money in writing. So I built a publishing company.
Growing up in Philadelphia, a guidance counselor steered me away from writing. I spent years working as a defense contractor, including time in Kuwait and Iraq. Then a major life shift brought me back to the thing I'd always loved most: telling stories.
That was 2012. I haven't stopped since.
From freelancer to founder...
What started as freelance assignments turned into bylines at Hotspawn and SlashGear. Then print features in Black Politics and The Brownstone Magazine. Then GNL Magazine, an independent gaming and tech publication I founded in 2017; because the spaces I wanted to write for simply didn't exist yet.
Building GNL from scratch taught me things no client brief ever could. I learned SEO by watching what ranked and what didn't. I learned content architecture by building hub pages that drive consistent organic traffic. I learned editorial systems by being the only person running them.
I learned monetization by building a real partnership program. I also learned how to protect it from every grey niche operator who came knocking.
That's the work I now do for others.
I help publications, media brands, and content-driven businesses grow. My work spans content strategy, editorial systems, SEO-aware writing, and Squarespace design. I bring the same thinking I've applied to my own platforms: what's working, what isn't, and what to build next.
I'm based between Atlanta, Bangkok, and Chengdu. I also run Blerd Travels, covering solo travel through Asia as a Black American woman. And when I'm not doing any of the above... I write fiction.
"Featured by NBC News as a voice on AI, freelancing, and the future of human-led content."Being an introverted Black American writer, I have to do my best to put myself out there.
